Thousands rally in Hannover against TTIP trade deal a day before Obama’s visit
Thousands of protesters have come out onto the streets of Hannover to say ‚No‘ to the controversial TTIP US-EU trade deal. Many in Germany fear it will reduce consumer protection and undermine workers’ protection.
„Free Love – Not Free Trade“: With Obama En Route, 90,000 March Against TTIP
With Obama arriving to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday to push for the deal, the expression of dissent in the city of Hannover matches recent reporting explaining how support for the TTIP has fallen on both sides of the Atlantic.

Israel’s center-left leader says his party must stop being seen as ‘Arab-lovers’
(20.4.2016) The leader of Israel’s center-left Zionist Union opposition party said Tuesday that to win over more of the Israeli public it had to stop giving the impression that it is a party of “Arab-lovers,” a derogatory term often used by the extreme right to insult those who they perceive as obsessively defending and championing Israeli Arabs or Palestinians, whether in the political or social spheres.
Fighting Oppression, Inequality and Injustice on Passover
(17.4.2016) Protecting allies and partners like Israel is one of the most solemn duties of any Commander-in-Chief. Yet others in this race suggest we must remain “neutral” in order to negotiate. But Israel’s safety is simply non-negotiable. And it would be a grave mistake for the United States to cede the mantle of leadership in the peace process to anyone else.

London Mayor: Obama ‘Downright Hypocritical’ For Calling For UK To Remain In EU
“It is deeply anti-democratic — and much as I admire the United States, and much as I respect the President, I believe he must admit that his country would not dream of embroiling itself in anything of the kind,” the mayor stated. “The US guards its democracy with more hysterical jealousy than any other country on earth.”
Obama’s lecture to Brits is absurdly hypocritical
President Obama’s call for British voters not to pull out of the European Union is an act of hypocrisy so blatant, it’s breathtaking.
Barack Obama causes firestorm with threat against Great Britain
Anglophiles on both sides of the Atlantic were not amused.
Angela Merkel says TTIP deal good for beer
„He who does not have a beer, has nothing to drink,“ the chancellor added, quoting the 16th century German religious reformer Martin Luther after taking a sip of Bavaria‘s famed wheat beer.
Barack Obama won’t threaten Britain… as long as we do as he says
“You shouldn’t be afraid to hear an argument being made,” he said. “It’s not a threat.”
He said it so calmly, so casually – indeed, so charmingly – that you could easily have believed it. And he was speaking just as calmly, casually and charmingly less than a minute later, when he said that if the UK thought it would get a free trade deal with the US after Brexit, it was frankly dreaming.
Mr Obama‘s catchphrase is ‚Yes, you can!‘ – so why is he telling us Brits ‚No, you can‘t‘?
Besides, it is reassuring to know that he is a friend of this country. One of his first acts as president was to remove the bust of Winston Churchill from the Oval Office, so some of us formed the view that he thought the Anglo-American relationship was no longer all that special. Seven years later, we are being proved wrong.
It turns out Mr Obama now thinks it is so special that it authorises him to take part in our electoral process.
New Zealand Government Trying To Streamroller TPP Through Ratification Without Proper Scrutiny Or Public Input
Back in February, we noted that the TPP has been officially signed, and that the focus now moves on to ratification by each of the 12 participating countries. On this score, there‘s been plenty of sound and fury in the US, including bizarre demands to re-negotiate TPP, but less coverage of what is happening elsewhere. As we noted, Canada‘s ratification has ground to a halt as the new government there launches „widespread consultations.“ Japan, too, won‘t be ratifying TPP for a while, for reasons explained by The Mainichi site:

A “4. Bailout” for Greece & Debt Relief “light”? Whatever the name, Greeks are burdened with €9bn austerity package for 2016-2018
More austerity, more work and more measures. that was the slogan of Friday’s Eurogroup on Greece. An agreement between the two sides was not on the agenda. It was just talks to force the Greek government accept the conditions of the International Monetary Fund for an extra package of 3.6 billion euro “contingency measures” – 2% of GDP – for the case the debt-ridden country will not meet the third bailout targets in 2018 by implementing a 5.4 billion euro austerity.

When Hedge Funds Own Newspapers
My local paper was just purchased by a hedge fund. You know, the people who only care about making money. The paper was never perfectly balanced with conservative and liberal agendas, but on more than a few occasions they would print cartoons that made fun of the conservatives. Since the purchase, the cartoons that tease the right have noticeably decreased in number.
Also bei manchen Wahlcomputern.
FISA Court Rejects Arguments By First Public Advocate To Argue NSA PRISM Backdoor Searches Are Unconstitutional
One of the big complaints in the past, is that the FISA Court is no court at all. Only one side — the government — gets to present its case, and then the judges decide.
The USA Freedom Act, however, added the ability of the FISC to appoint a public advocate. Many have been quite reasonably skeptical about this — in terms of how often it would be used, who would be appointed and how seriously the FISC would take the public advocate. In this case, we see that the public advocate did, in fact, argue that parts of the PRISM program were unconstitutional… and the FISC then rejected that.

CPJ concerned by reports of Egyptian accusations against Reuters
The Committee to Protect Journalists is concerned by reports in the Egyptian media that authorities have accused Reuters of „spreading false news“ in a report on the death of an Italian student. The press reports could not be verified and Reuters said it had not received notification of legal action.
Press reports citing security officials said that the Legal Affairs Department of the Ministry of Interior filed a criminal complaint with central Cairo‘s Qasr al-Nil police station against Reuters and its Cairo bureau chief, Michael Georgy, accusing them of „spreading false news aimed at disturbing public order,“ and „spreading rumors to harm Egypt‘s reputation.“
