Sharif proposes, Khan disposes

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday offered to form a judicial commission comprising three judges of the Supreme Court to probe alleged rigging in last year’s general elections as demanded by the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, in a bid to rescue his government from the political quagmire that threatens to sink his government if matters spin out of control in the next two days.

However, the cricketer-turned-politician has dug in his heels and demanded that the prime minister should step down before any such commission is formed.

Egypt: Rab’a Killings Likely Crimes against Humanity

On August 14, security forces attacked the Rab’a protest encampment from each of its main entrances, using armed personnel carriers (APCs), bulldozers, ground troops, and snipers. Security forces gave little to no effective warning and opened fire into large crowds, leaving no safe exit for nearly 12 hours. Security forces fired on makeshift medical facilities and positioned snipers to target whoever sought to enter or exit Rab’a hospital. Towards the end of the day, the central stage, field hospital, mosque, and first floor of Rab’a hospital were set ablaze, probably by security forces.

All According to Plan: The Rab’a Massacre and Mass Killings of Protesters in Egypt

The 188-page report documents the way the Egyptian police and army methodically opened fire with live ammunition on crowds of demonstrators opposed to the military’s July 3 ouster of Mohamed Morsy, Egypt’s first elected civilian president, at six demonstrations between July 5 and August 17, 2013. While there is also evidence that some protesters used firearms during several of these demonstrations, Human Rights Watch was able to confirm their use in only a few instances, which do not justify the grossly disproportionate and premeditated lethal attacks on overwhelmingly peaceful protesters.

Egypt‘s Rabaa deaths ‚crime against humanity‘

A new report has alleged that the Egyptian security forces‘ killings of at least 1,000 protesters at the Rabaa al-Adawiya Square sit-in last year in Cairo „most likely amount to crimes against humanity“.

The 195-page Human Rights Watch (HRW) report released on Tuesday found that Egyptian security forces „gunned down hundreds of unarmed protesters“ when they moved in to disperse the sit-in on August 14.

The killings were „part of a policy to use lethal force against largely unarmed protesters on political grounds,“ HRW found, and resulted in „one of the world‘s largest killings of demonstrators in a single day in recent history“.

HRW said that over a dozen senior Egyptian leaders should be investigated for their parts in the protesters‘ deaths, including Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim and current President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who was defence minister at the time.

UPDATE 2-Turkish exporters see profit from Russian ban on Western foods

„The foreign ministry has been clear that it is not possible for partners in NATO and the European Union or candidate countries for the EU, Turkey among them, to be exploiting this trade war and to not follow the policy of the EU,“ Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Kourkoulas told Greek Skai TV.

Left to Obama: Check spy agencies

Activists on the left are demanding President Obama flex his muscle over the country’s spy agencies.

The CIA’s admission that a handful of officials spied on Senate staffers is proof that the White House has lost control of the intelligence agencies, critics say. They are also discomfited by the continued support Obama has offered for agency Director John Brennan.

The Palestinian Holocaust in Gaza

I think that a new, repugnant form of fascism is emerging with notable strength, at this time in human history when more that seven billion inhabitants are struggling for their survival.

None of these circumstances have anything to do with the creation of the Roman Empire, around 2,400 years ago, or with the U.S. empire which, in this region only 200 years ago, was described by Simón Bolívar who exclaimed, “…the United States appears to be destined by providence to plague America with misery in the name of liberty.” England was the first true colonial power to use its dominion over a large part of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, North America, and many Caribbean islands, in the first half of the 20th century.

Missouri teen shot by police was two days away from starting college

„He was funny, silly. He would make you laugh. Any problems that were going on or any situation, there wasn‘t nothing he couldn‘t solve. He‘d bring people back together,“ his father, Michael Brown Sr., told reporters.

Family members nicknamed him the „gentle giant.“

For teachers, he was „a student who loomed large and didn‘t cause trouble,“ the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Eyewitness to Michael Brown shooting recounts his friend’s death

The two walked and talked. That’s when Johnson says they saw the police car rolling up to them.

The officer demanded that the two “get the f—k on the sidewalk,” Johnson says. “His exact words were get the f—k on the sidewalk.” (…)

Brown and Johnson took off running together. There were three cars lined up along the side of the street. Johnson says he ducked behind the first car, whose two passengers were screaming. Crouching down a bit, he watched Brown run past.

“Keep running, bro!,” he said Brown yelled. Then Brown yelled it a second time. Those would be the last words Johnson’s friend, “Big Mike,” would ever say to him.

Brown made it past the third car. Then, “blam!” the officer took his second shot, striking Brown in the back. At that point, Johnson says Brown stopped, turned with his hands up and said “I don’t have a gun, stop shooting!”

By that point, Johnson says the officer and Brown were face-to-face. The officer then fired several more shots.

Police Chief Gives First Details Of Fatal Ferguson Police Shooting

“One of those individuals, at the time, came in as the officer was exiting his car, allegedly pushed the police officer back in the car, where he physically assaulted the police officer. It is our understanding at this point in the investigation that within the police car there was a struggle over the police officer’s weapon,“ Belmar said.

Belmar said the officer’s gun was fired at least once inside the police car, but the officer shot and killed Brown outside of the vehicle. Belmar said the number of shots fired was “more than a few.”

When pressed on whether Brown was fleeing at the time of those shots, Belmar demurred.

“I’m not going to be able to get into any of those types of questions,” said Belmar.
