Indigene in Brasilien gegen Fußball-WM

EFF to Court: There‘s No Doubt the Government Destroyed NSA Spying Evidence

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) told a federal court today that there was no doubt that the government has destroyed years of evidence of NSA spying – the government itself has admitted to it in recent court filings. In a brief filed today in response to this illegal destruction, EFF is asking that the court make an „adverse inference“ that the destroyed evidence would show that plaintiffs communications and records were in fact swept up in the mass NSA spying programs.

Germany Considers Setting Up A Special Court To Determine Who Can Demand To Have Embarassing Histories Deleted From Google

We recently wrote about a ridiculous decision in the EU Court of Justice, which accepted the bizarre concept of a „right to be forgotten“ and ordered that Google had to delete links to old news stories about Mario Costeja Gonzalez even though those news stories could stay online. And, of course, this has set off a frenzy of folks seeking to have their embarrassing histories deleted, because, really, if you had an embarrassing public history, why wouldn‘t you?

And, within weeks, it‘s already reached the point that Germany is looking into setting up a special court to review such cases and determine what embarrassing histories Google will need to delete, and which embarrassing histories you‘ll need to learn to live with people finding on Google.

Google AdSense‘s Idiotic And Hypocritical Morality Police Force Us To Remove Ads On News Stories

One of the videos in question was even hosted on YouTube and had Google ads enabled on that video. In fact, we‘ve since discovered that both of the videos in question are on YouTube and have Google ads. You can see the original video here and the Bow Wow video here. Both of them are monetized by YouTube with Google ads. And yet, somehow we‘re the ones violating Google‘s policies? (…)

Before this we thought maybe the two could co-exist but, frankly, I‘d love to just dump AdSense from the site outright at this point, given this sort of intrusion.

Congresswoman Barbara Lee Responds to President Obama’s West Point Speech

President Obama gave an important and very well articulated vision of his foreign policy today. I was pleased to hear how well his vision is grounded in the hard lessons learned in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, I was disappointed that the President did not discuss the need to both reign in and repeal the overly broad Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF).

Israeli ex-officer leads Ukraine protests: Reports

(16. Februar) Four other Israelis, who had previously served in the army, were recently reported to have taken part in opposition rallies in Ukraine’s capital, Kiev.

They were born in Ukraine but migrated to Israel and joined its armed forces before returning to the European country for the demonstrations.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian media said that an Israeli tycoon provides financial support to the opposition in Ukraine, adding that Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency is one of the instigators of the unrest in the country.

The Web Is In The Public Domain… But The Document That Put It There Is Locked Up By Copyright

We‘ve pointed out before how grateful we are that Tim Berners-Lee didn‘t look to patent the World Wide Web in the early days, because it‘s unlikely it would have developed as it did if he had. Over at CERN, where Berners-Lee worked at the time, they have an archive in which they show „the document that officially put the World Wide Web into the public domain on 30 April 1993.“ Indeed, it is a great thing that CERN quickly and clearly put the main concepts behind the web into the public domain. But, as David Sleight points out it does seem rather ridiculously ironic, that in order to view the documents that „put the web into the public domain,“ you have to agree to a copyright notice from CERN:

House mulls Berlusconi ‚coup‘ inquiry

Italy‘s Lower House is considering launching an investigation into an alleged plot that led to Silvio Berlusconi‘s ouster in November 2011, as suggested in a book by former US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. On Thursday, House whips unanimously agreed to examine in June a proposal to form a commission of inquiry, said Renato Brunetta, House whip for Berlusconi‘s center-right Forza Italia.

Words Mean Something: How Eric Holder Pretends He Won‘t Put Reporters In Jail Without Actually Saying That

The DOJ has been claiming that it will be more respectful of journalists and their rights after two scandals from last year, involving spying on AP reporters and claiming reporter James Rosen was a „co-conspirator“ in order to get access to his phone and email records. However, it‘s pretty clear that the DOJ still has no problem using questionable legal moves against reporters, such as in the ongoing situation with James Risen (note the one letter difference from the different reporter, Rosen, above). As we noted recently, the DOJ is still trying to send Risen to jail.

James Clapper: Yes, Snowden Emailed NSA Lawyer, But Not About His Concerns

Earlier today, we noted that NBC had confirmed that Snowden had raised some of his concerns to people within the intelligence community. In response, James Clapper‘s office (the Office of the Director of National Intelligence) has nowreleased what they claim is the only email Snowden sent to the NSA‘s legal team. The email was sent just about a month before Snowden went to Hong Kong, and, as ODNI notes, does not address the issues related to Snowden‘s whistleblowing concerns:
