Living in Doubt: West Virginians Seek Safe Water After Elk River Chemical Spill

It‘s been more than two months since Freedom Industries spilled 10,000 gallons of toxic 4-methylcyclohexane methanol (MCHM) and an unknown amount of a polyglycol ether, known as PPH, into the Elk River, a tributary of the Kanawha River, in Charleston, West Virginia. On January 9, 2014, nearly 300,000 residents from nine counties in the vicinity of Charleston were left without drinking water after the spill occurred just upstream from the main West Virginia American Water municipal intake and treatment center. State officials issued a „do not drink“ order late in the day. On January 13, the advisory was lifted. But days later, Freedom Industries filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to hold off the growing tide of liability lawsuits for damages resulting from the spill. Two months later, residents and some businesses continue to use bottled water for drinking and cooking because they do not trust that tap water is safe.

Ukraine’s army command prevents 1,500 servicemen from returning to Crimea

“They are now being brainwashed and forced to stay in Ukraine. But they have parents, women and children in Sevastopol. According to our information, about 90 percent of sailors on Ukrainian warships which were pulled out to Odessa want to return to Sevastopol and serve the people of Crimea,” the parents said, adding the commanders of Ukrainian warships were tearing letters of resignation, threatening their children with prosecution in case they tried to leave the place of service without permission.

China Warns West Not To Enforce Sanctions Against Russia

„Sanctions could lead to retaliatory action, and that would trigger a spiral with unforeseeable consequences,“ warns China‘s envoy to Germany adding that „we don‘t see any point in sanctions.“ On the heels of Merkel‘s warning that Russia risked „massive“ political and economic damage if it did not change course, Reuters reports ambassador Shi Mingde urged patience saying „the door is still open“ for diplomacy (though we suspect it is not) ahead of this weekend‘s referendum. Russia‘s Deputy Economy Minister Alexei Likhachev responded by promising „symmetrical“ sanctions by Moscow. So now we have China joining the fray more aggressively.

German Exporters Fire Warning Shot About Russia “Sanction-Spiral,” Banks At Risk

Anton Börner, president of the German Association of Exporters (BGA), which represents 120,000 companies, the lifeblood of the economy, warned at a press conference in Berlin that further escalation of the crisis in the Ukraine could hit exporters very hard. He said that the BGA expected exports to rise 3% to €1.13 trillion and imports 2% to €914 billion for a trade surplus of €215.6 billion – the highest in history. But “if the crisis in the Crimea escalates further,” these wondrous forecasts of endlessly growing exports and surpluses “could turn very quickly into a mal-calculation.”

Kriegspsychotherapeuten

Public feud between CIA, Senate panel follows years of tension over interrogation report

For years, a small group of Senate staffers made regular commutes to a Virginia office used by the CIA, took the elevators down to the basement and tapped the keypad combination to an unmarked door.

Inside, a collection of eight or so computers were loaded with millions of CIA cables, memos and other records that documented what many regard as one of the darker chapters of the agency’s history — its use of harsh interrogation measures to get terrorism suspects to talk.

Meeting with permanent members of the Security Council

Today we have one issue we had planned to discuss and one that is not on the agenda. The first one deals with the development of relations between the Russian Federation and the countries of Central America and the Caribbean.

The second matter, which we cannot disregard, concerns the events that are developing in Ukraine, in Crimea, and everything that has to do with this difficult problem, which has arisen – and I want to stress this – through no fault of ours. However, this crisis has occurred and we‘re involved in it whether we like it or not. I note that this is primarily a domestic Ukrainian crisis. Unfortunately, all of us realise that we have been drawn into this situation.

If You Want To Fix U.S. Broadband Competition, Start By Killing State-Level Protectionist Laws Written By Duopolists

For fifteen years now I‘ve watched as phone and cable duopolies lobby to pass draft legislation designed to keep broadband uncompetitive. Specifically, in more than a dozen states these protectionist measures either hinder or outright ban a town or city‘s ability to wire itself for broadband (either alone or with a private industry partner) — even in cases where nobody else will. If the laws don‘t ban such efforts outright, they force anyone looking to build a broadband network to jump through layers upon layers of bureaucratic hoops, during which the regional duopolies with limitless budgets harass the efforts with lawsuits and negative publicity campaigns (I‘ve seen ISPs hire push pollsters to tell locals that a government-built network would ban their religious programming).

Why NSA‘s Betrayal Of Internet Security Is Akin To A Massive Public Health Disaster

One of the most shocking of Snowden‘s revelations was that the NSA and GCHQ are deliberately weakening the Internet‘s security — either by undermining standards, or by using zero-day vulnerabilities to break into systems. More recent news about the huge scale of attempts to infect computers with malware only compounds that outrage. It‘s hard to convey to ordinary Internet users the seriousness of what the NSA and GCHQ have done here, but in a brilliant new column in the Guardian, it looks like Cory Doctorow has done just that:

5 Myths We‘re Likely To Hear At Tomorrow‘s DMCA Hearing

(12.03.) Tomorrow, the House Judiciary’s Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet is holding a hearing on the safe harbors of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Section 512, as part of a continuing reexamination of U.S. copyright law. We cover this important framework frequently, because it has been instrumental to the growth of the Internet – by many accounts online safe harbors “saved the Web.” Now that the DMCA is over 15 years old, a number of pervasive misconceptions have developed about its safe harbors. Let’s consider some of the top DMCA misconceptions that we’re likely to hear tomorrow.
