India: More questions after 15 die in Goa collapse

India’s booming construction industry is set to be worth hundreds of billions of pounds by 2025, according to a report by Global Construction Perspectives and Oxford Economics.

However, this rapid growth has often come at the expense of safety standards. Building collapses are common in India, as massive demand for housing and lax regulations often encourage builders to cut corners by using substandard materials, or add unauthorised extra floors.

The artists who own the moon

The 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits nations from claiming sovereignty of celestial objects, but is unclear on whether this ban extends to private companies. That makes the Google initiative more than harmless space fun. In law, there may be nothing to stop the competitors from claiming the moon, or at least part of it, for their own commercial exploitation.

Verfehlte Symbolpolitik in Hamburg: Panzer statt Hirn

Gefahrengebiet Politik

Corporations Control Our Lives

In our nation, finance has a hold on almost every single part of our lives – from the day we’re born, until we take our last breath. Capitalism and the quest for larger profits have taken hold of our healthcare, our education, our homes, our communication, and even our government. Today, most babies are born in for-profit hospitals, and their medical claims are paid by for-profit insurance. As children grow, many go to for-profit charter schools or private schools, and our public education system continues to crumble.

Wikipedia co-founder: ‚U.S. should be actually seeking out criminals, not wasting money on snooping‘

I think it’s a good thing, and I don’t think people stopped seeing each other, I think people see each other more often, they keep up with old friends, they keep up with family. It brings us together as a more interconnected society. It allows us to know people all around the world as people, not just as a vision of something. You know, when I grew up in a small town in Alabama, our idea of Russians and what Russians like was so far from the truth, but today this wouldn’t happen to people, because they would say, “Oh yeah, I actually know some Russians online, we’re playing this game together,” or “We chat,” or so forth. It’s allowing the globe to come together and view each other as human beings in a new way. There’s almost no downside to that.

Statement by the Spokesperson of the High Representative on the abduction of Syrian human rights activists

On the last day of the year, the High Representative reiterates her concern at the fate of the human rights activist Razan Zeitouneh and her three associates – Wael Hamadeh, Nazem al-Hammadi, and Samira al-Khalil – who were abducted from the Damascus suburb of Douma by unknown gunmen three weeks ago.

She shares the increasing dismay of the Syrian people and the international community at what has happened to some of the most courageous and peaceful civil activists operating
inside Syria.

The High Representative is alarmed that there has been no progress in identifying the perpetrators and the whereabouts of the abducted activists. Each day that passes increases the risks to their well-being.

It is imperative that all those with access to the individuals responsible for ordering the abduction help bring about the release of the activists through all possible means.

Remarks John Kerry Secretary of State David Citadel Hotel Jerusalem January 5, 2014

The security of Israel is always paramount – in my mind, in our mind. For 29 years I had the privilege of serving in the United States Senate, and I am proud to say I had a 100 percent voting record with respect to those issues of concern to Israel, and I don’t intend to change that now. Israel’s security is critical, and the United States relationship is ironclad.

But so is our concern for the people of Palestine and for the Palestinians and their future. And I can guarantee all parties that President Obama and I are committed to putting forward ideas that are fair, that are balanced, and that improve the security of all of the people of this region.
