RAMALLAH, December 21, 2017 (WAFA) – Palestinians expect a sweeping vote when the United Nations General Assembly discusses a resolution on Jerusalem later Thursday in spite of US threats.

The United Nations General Assembly is scheduled to hold a session under the “United for Peace” term to vote on a resolution calling for the annulment of a US decision recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel.

The United States vetoed on Monday a similar resolution brought before the UN Security Council.

In July, the ANC’s national policy conference had decided to adopt a resolution made by the ANC in the Western Cape to downgrade South Africa’s embassy in Israel, because of the expansion of Israeli settlements into Palestinian territories. That resolution would then be brought to the elective conference where it would have to be approved before it could be put to government.

The decision comes at a time when international attention is once against on Israel and Palestine following remarks by US President Donald Trump, who declared Jerusalem to be Israel’s capital.

Ironically, one of the most vulnerable to US financial pressure is also the least likely to go against Washington in Thursday‘s UN vote: Israel.

“Everyone involved, not only the girl but also her parents and those around them, will not escape from what they deserve,” Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said on Tuesday.

It didn’t matter at that moment that to the Palestinians these images would broadcast a very different image and could quite likely inflame the already existing tensions. It didn’t even matter that when broadcast on international networks, all a foreign audience would see was a defiant young woman being suppressed by cruel occupiers. It didn’t even matter that this is almost certainly exactly what Ahed Tamimi wanted. Because at that moment, the only thing that mattered was satisfying an atavistic desire that our brave soldiers not be humiliated in public.

Israeli soldiers forced their way into the Nariman and Bassem Tamimi’s home before dawn on Tuesday, the way they have done dozens of times before — only this time instead of leaving with Nariman or Bassem, they arrested the couple’s 16-year-old daughter, Ahed Tamimi.

It is alleged that Ahed was arrested for slapping a soldier during a demonstration the day before. The demonstration was organized to protest Israel’s use of force during a protest on Friday, when Ahed’s 14-year-old cousin Mohammed was shot in the face by an Israeli soldier, leaving him in critical condition. After a six-hour surgery the boy was put into a medically induced coma for at least 72 hours.
