UN allows Saudi dictatorship to investigate their own war crimes in Yemen

The Saudi text calls for an investigation, but empowers the Saudi-led coalition to conduct that investigation, only calling on the UN to offer support to them with “technical assistance,” and then only to the extent they request it.

Essentially this means the Saudis, and their allies in the Yemeni “government-in-exile,” will be investigating themselves on the question of war crimes, meaning that all those official claims that huge, well-documented incidents “didn’t happen” will become the official international narrative.

Saudis Seek to Fend Off U.N. Inquiry on Yemen

(24.September) As Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies pressed their military offensive against Houthi rebels in Yemen, Saudi diplomats were waging their own battle to fend off calls in the United Nations Human Rights Council for an international inquiry into abuses by all parties to the Yemeni conflict.

Those calls came in a council resolution submitted Thursday by the Netherlands, with support from a group of mainly Western countries, that requests the United Nations high commissioner for human rights send a mission to Yemen.

Argentina Proposes a 100-Year-Plus Copyright Extension on Photography

The law would extend copyrights on works retroactively, so a lifetime of photos that are already in the public domain would be re-captured by copyright. That would bring about a huge amount of legal uncertainty over works that have already been shared, remixed, sold, and modified in innumerable ways. If this bill passes, many tens of thousands of photographs that have been uploaded into cultural archives, including Wikipedia, may have to be erased from the Internet or else they could face civil, or even criminal prosecution failing to do so.

An Open Letter from Canadian Artists Against Bill C-51

We are Canadian artists. We have been blessed to be part of a country that does not send poets to gulags, that does not behead people for saying things a government considers critical of it, and that does not murder dissidents and journalists wholesale.

But we know that totalitarian and repressive regimes always try to shut down artists, along with any other independent voices. We are alert to the possibilities: we, and all who wish a free and open society, must strongly oppose such tendencies when they arise.

Bill C-51 directly attacks the creative arts and free expression in this country.

This bill was rammed through Parliament by the Harper Conservative government, despite a huge public outcry and without due consultation. As many experts have pointed out, this bill allows the government to silence dissenting voices without oversight or accountability. It criminalizes “advocating or promoting the commission of terrorism offences in general,” which, because of this vague wording, could be interpreted in some very stupid ways. In effect, it gives the government carte blanche to suppress any voice they don’t like.

Kontrollmission in Kiew

At HP, Fiorina supplied NSA with surveillance material

In the weeks following the 9/11 attacks, while she was CEO of HP, current Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina complied with an urgent request from Michael Hayden, the director of the National Security Agency (NSA), to redirect delivery of HP servers to NSA headquarters where they‘d be used for warrantless surveillance, according to a Yahoo report.

Hayden asked Fiorina to send truckloads of HP servers intended for retail stores into the hands of federal officials for the secret program, codenamed “Stellar Wind,“ which was approved by President George W. Bush. The program would set a precedent for later NSA initiatives that would grow into the largest domestic surveillance program in U.S. history.
