Burns: Don’t dismiss Rand Paul’s tax plan

Most news media dismissed Rand Paul’s tax plan, like his candidacy for president, as a nonstarter. But many of those reports failed to grasp a gigantic part of the plan. They also wrongly concluded that the flat tax was a big break for high-income people but not so good for middle-income people.

Let’s take a closer look at the plan the Republican senator from Kentucky proposes.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ statement after voting in the July 5th referendum

Today is a day of celebration because democracy is a cause to celebrate, to be joyful. And when democracy conquers fear and blackmail, then it also leads to redemption, and a way forward.

Today, the Greek people send a very powerful message. A message of dignity, of determination. A message that they are taking control of their choices. Many may try to ignore the will of a government. But no one can ignore the will of a people who are seeking to live with dignity, to live life on their own terms.

Today, democracy trumps fear. Our people’s determination trumps fear. I am confident that tomorrow we will set a new course for all the peoples of Europe.

Referendum: Greek voters angry at media & creditors, scare-mongering campaign seems to backfire

The family of a friend is divided: her husband and her two children, 20 and 21, will vote “NO” in Sunday’s referendum, while she – a left-wing voter all through her voting life – was still undecided on early Saturday afternoon. “Hm… I don’t know yet, I despise the old corrupt politicians but I’m scared about our economic future,” Eleni tells me.

She was scared when she heard on Friday night about the Financial Times report claiming that a 30% ‘haircut’ on deposits of over €8,000 was possible.

On Sunday morning, Eleni, 55, went to the polling station and crossed the NO. “Ah, WTF! I cannot be on the same line with all the corrupt politicians of the past, with the country’s lenders.”

Quartet Of Crises Threatens Europe´s Core

Rem Korteweg of the Center for European Reform compares the interlocking crises to the four horsemen of the apocalypse in the New Testament Book of Revelation: harbingers of a „day of judgment“ representing conquest, war, famine and death.
„The EU‘s leaders will find it hard to tame these four horsemen,“ the Dutch thinker wrote in an essay. „If a European answer cannot be found, the horsemen will continue to promote chaos, instability and mutual recrimination within the EU.“

The British left is finally turning against the EU

This week has finally seen this lesson start to be internalised by the left. It has done more to further the eurosceptic cause than anything Ukip has ever done. The debate has shifted from the right-wing critique of Europe – immigration, market interference – to the left-wing one, which is of German fiscal extremism applied to powerless local communities.
