März 2011) For a week next month, St. Louis County Police Chief Timothy Fitch, along with law enforcement officials from across the United States, will visit Israel to learn how Israel‘s police, intelligence and security forces prevent terror attacks. The weeklong program is part of the Anti-Defamation League‘s (ADL) National Counter-Terrorism Seminar which will include visiting the cities of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Tiberias.

(12. August) In a statement, Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor issued a statement dismissing the inquiry.

He cited Israel‘s view that „the Human Rights Council had long ago turned into the ‚terrorist rights council‘ and a kangaroo court, whose ‚investigations‘ are pre-determined.“

The UN Human Rights Council investigation led by Canadian Prof. William Schabas – who was derided by many this week after he refused to admit Hamas is a terrorist organization, and said Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu should be prosecuted for Operation Cast Lead even though he was opposition leader at the time – is being snubbed by the government, with the Foreign Ministry calling it a “kangaroo court.”

Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman went further than Netanyahu, saying Jerusalem should not allow Schabas to step foot inside the country. Saying “Israel should not cooperate with the committee,” Liberman added: “We must deal with them, but not cooperate or give legitimization to haters of Israel.”

The lull in the fighting between Israel and Hamas has sparked a backlash from soldiers and civilians. Many reservists accused the military of sending them into battle with inadequate equipment and training as well as unclear orders.

In conversations about Gaza, I have heard many thoughtful people in the Jewish community lament the loss of Palestinian lives in Gaza but then say, “But Hamas…,” as if that were the heart of the problem. I’d like to suggest that, when we have these conversations about Hamas and Israel’s current bombing campaign, we begin with the necessary context and historical perspective.

The Kurdistan Region Government respectfully requests the members of the European Union to urgently come forward and offer humanitarian aid to the IDPs who have taken refuge in the Kurdistan Region. It is worth mentioning that the displaced people are suffering severely due to the lack of shelter, food and other basic needs. Urgent aid is needed to save lives of thousands of people. We also call upon the members of the EU to provide the Peshmerga forces with necessary arms to deter ISIS offences and protect civilians and displaced people. The Kurdish forces are in an asymmetrical war against an organized and well-armed terrorist group. With no doubt, rapid equipping of Peshmerga forces with heavy and sophisticated weapons will change the equation in the battlefield in favor of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces.

We hope that the members of the European Union will urgently and positively respond to our request.

A new book, to be released Sept. 2, discloses a previously unknown connection between Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, John F. Kennedy and the CIA. Ten years ago, the infamous photos from Abu Ghraib thrust the issue of torture onto the front page. While some tried to employ the few-bad-apples defense, it was clear then and it is even clearer now that the horror at Abu Ghraib grew out of problems at the top. Torture by U.S. military personnel and intelligence officers was, at its core, a failure of leadership.

Barzani forderte unterdessen im Interview mit dem deutsche Magazin „Focus“ die internationale Staatengemeinschaft auf, die Finanzquellen der Terrormiliz Islamischer Staat (IS) umgehend trockenzulegen. Durch Erpressung und den Diebstahl von Öl nehme die IS jeden Tag drei Millionen US-Dollar ein, erklärte er.

Anschließend sprach die Bundeskanzlerin auch mit dem Präsidenten der kurdischen Regionalregierung im Irak, Massoud Barzani. Sie dankte ihm für den entschlossenen Einsatz im Kampf gegen die Terrororganisation „Islamischer Staat“ und für den Schutz, den die Regionalregierung den Flüchtlingen verschiedener Minderheiten gewähre. Die Bundeskanzlerin unterrichtete ihn über die deutsche Hilfeleistung. Bundesaußenminister Steinmeier werde sich morgen in Erbil über die Lage vor Ort informieren und weitere Hilfe anbieten. Deutschland werde den Irak weiterhin solidarisch und nach Kräften unterstützen.
