Leak the CIA report: it‘s the only way to know the whole truth about torture
Unless, of course, you think spies redacting 6,300 pages of their own sins is transparency. Look how much leaks told us this week
The CIA is getting away with keeping every important secret about torture
As retired Major Major General Antonio M Taguba, the man who originally investigated the torture Abu Ghraib a decade ago, wrote this week:
Ultimately, as we learned with Abu Ghraib, the best way of guarding against torture is an American public well informed about the moral and strategic costs of such abuse.
More than 12 years since the CIA started one of the darkest periods in its history, and they have yet to learn.

If Not Now, When?
We are witnessing Israel’s third military operation in the Gaza strip in the past six years. We are alarmed and horrified by the death and destruction being committed in our name. This is a moment of truth for the Jewish community, a moment that demands action.
Gaza war gives rise to new Jewish group targeting Jewish institutions that support occupation
The Gaza war has given birth to a new Jewish organization of young people who are highly critical of the Jewish establishment’s support for Israel. Called #IfNotNow, the group held an organizing meeting in New York last night. Eighty people attended (by the looks of it, almost all of them young). (…)
And Monday night to commemorate Tisha B’av, the holiday of the destruction of the temple, several hundred demonstrated at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, led by #IfNotNow. A poster at the front said, “Stop the War on Gaza.”
Don´t serve
We were soldiers in a wide variety of units and positions in the Israeli military—a fact we now regret, because, in our service, we found that troops who operate in the occupied territories aren’t the only ones enforcing the mechanisms of control over Palestinian lives. In truth, the entire military is implicated. For that reason, we now refuse to participate in our reserve duties, and we support all those who resist being called to service.
The Israeli Army, a fundamental part of Israelis’ lives, is also the power that rules over the Palestinians living in the territories occupied in 1967. As long as it exists in its current structure, its language and mindset control us: We divide the world into good and evil according to the military’s categories;

We are Israeli reservists. We refuse to serve.
We are more than 50 Israelis who were once soldiers and now declare our refusal to be part of the reserves. We oppose the Israeli Army and the conscription law. Partly, that’s because we revile the current military operation. But most of the signers below are women and would not have fought in combat. For us, the army is flawed for reasons far broader than “Operation Protective Edge,” or even the occupation. We rue the militarization of Israel and the army’s discriminatory policies.
HTTPS as a ranking signal
For now it‘s only a very lightweight signal — affecting fewer than 1% of global queries, and carrying less weight than other signals such as high-quality content — while we give webmasters time to switch to HTTPS. But over time, we may decide to strengthen it, because we’d like to encourage all website owners to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to keep everyone safe on the web.
OpenSSL Security Advisory [6 Aug 2014]
A flaw in OBJ_obj2txt may cause pretty printing functions such as
X509_name_oneline, X509_name_print_ex et al. to leak some information from the
stack. Applications may be affected if they echo pretty printing output to the
attacker. OpenSSL SSL/TLS clients and servers themselves are not affected.
OpenSSL 0.9.8 users should upgrade to 0.9.8zb
OpenSSL 1.0.0 users should upgrade to 1.0.0n.
OpenSSL 1.0.1 users should upgrade to 1.0.1i.

Attempt To Frame Justin Amash‘s Protection Of Civil Liberties As ‚Supporting Terrorists‘ Fails Miserably At The Polls
Rep. Justin Amash has been one of the most involved and active voices in Congress on pushing back against the intelligence community‘s overreach and attack on our civil liberties. Many folks know him for the Amash Amendment, which would have defunded the NSA‘s bulk collection of phone records under Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act. While it was narrowly defeated, it certainly woke up many in Congress to the fact that the surveillance scandal was a real deal. Over the last year, though, we‘d been hearing more and more stories about how the „mainstream Republicans“ were looking to unseat Amash in the primaries. Amash is often identified as being in the „Tea Party“ wing of the party, and sometimes described as more „libertarian.“
Lebanon ceasefire falters; Saudi offers $1 billion to army
The Lebanese army and Islamist militants clashed on Wednesday despite a 24-hour ceasefire agreed to end five days of fighting that has killed dozens of people in the most serious spillover of Syria‘s three-year civil war into Lebanon.
Tektronix Uses DMCA Notice To Try To Stop Oscilloscope Hacking
Another day, another abuse of the DMCA‘s anti-circumvention provisions to stop things that have nothing whatsoever to do with copyright. As pointed out by Slashdot, the Hackaday site recently had a post about how to clone some Tektronix application modules for its MSO2000 line of oscilloscopes. The post explained a simple hack to enable the application module to do a lot more. And… in response, Tektronix sent a DMCA takedown notice demanding the entire post be taken down.
Demonstrators reflect deep, divisive Gaza positions

Vladimir Putin pretends that he can make Russia self-sufficient and strong
Such problems have not yet hurt Mr Putin. Indeed, he is more popular than ever and his propaganda apparatus is proving to be highly effective. A poll released this week by the Levada Centre, a think-tank in Moscow, shows that 74% of Russians have a negative view of America, the highest number in Russia’s post-Soviet history. The showdown with the West over Ukraine has allowed for a “powerful discharge of frustration” built up over years since the Soviet collapse, says Lev Gudkov, director of the Levada Centre. And now that Mr Putin knows relations with the West are spoiled no matter what, he may be prepared to up the ante again.
Why Aren‘t ISIS and Al-Qaeda Attacking Israel?
With the recent slaughter of Palestinians taking place on television screens across the world, only the grossly misinformed would believe that Israel’s Palestinian extermination program is actually “self-defense.”
