Apparently the Supreme Court justices were not impressed with Harperâs desperate attempt to pressure them. Even President Obama continues to balk on the TransCanadaâs Keystone XL pipeline that would take oil from Alberta to the US Gulf Coast. Harper announced that he was âprofoundly disappointedâ that Obama delayed a decision on Keystone, and spoke of the need to diversify Canadaâs oil industry (97% of Canadian oil exports now go to the US). Now his whole vision of Canada as the ultimate âhewer of wood and exporter of oilâ, and best friend of the US, looks on the verge of collapse.

Japans government approves larger military role
Written under U.S. direction after World War II, the 1947 constitution says the Japanese people „forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation.“ It also says that „land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained.“ The article was crafted to prevent a repeat of Japan‘s invasion and brutal occupation of wide swaths of Asia.
The Soaring Profits of the Military-Industrial Complex, The Soaring Costs of Military Casualties
There are two major beneficiaries of the two major wars launched by the US government: one domestic and one foreign. The three major domestic arms manufacturers, Lockheed Martin (LMT), Northrop Grumman (NOG) and Raytheon (RTN) have delivered record-shattering returns to their investors, CEOs and investment banks during the past decade and a half.
Putin to West: Stop turning world into ‚global barracks,‘ dictating rules to others
Russiaâs president has blamed the turmoil in Ukraine on the countryâs newly-elected leader Petro Poroshenko. Vladimir Putin also criticized the West for its intention to turn the planet into a „global barracks.“
âEveryone has right to be differentâ: Top 10 takeaways from Putin‘s foreign policy speech
‚Non-interference principle must be fit into European realitiesâ
Western interference in Ukraine led to catastrophic consequences for the country, Putin said, suggesting measures to prevent the repetition of a similar scenario in other countries on the continent.
âThe task is to fit the traditional principle of non-interference into modern European realities, initiating a serious international discussion of the issue. We all need some kind of a safety net in Europe, so that the Iraqi, Libyan, Syrian and Ukrainian precedents wonât turn into a contagious disease.â
âBlackmail wrong tool in international relationsâ
President Putin criticized Washington, which already imposed sanctions on Moscow after the accession of the Republic of Crimea into Russia, for making efforts to scuttle Russiaâs 1.12 billion euro deal on Mistral warships with France.
âWe know about the pressure that our American partners put on France to prevent the supply of Mistral [warships] to Russia. And we know that they hinted that if the French wonât supply Mistral [warships] then sanctions against their banks will be removed or, at least, minimized. What is this, if not blackmail?â
However, he once against stressed the importance of close cooperation between Moscow and Washington. ….

The European Union prepares the âsolidarity clauseâ framework for military use against citizens
âOn Tuesday, the representatives of the EU Member States in the Council adopted a decision on the so-called âsolidarity clauseâ. Were a disaster or a loosely defined crisis to occur, the organs of the European Union would be obliged to assist using all the instruments at their disposal. This includes military resourcesâ, warned Member of the Bundestag Andrej Hunko.

Court gave NSA broad leeway in surveillance, documents show
The United States has long had broad no-spying arrangements with those four countries â Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand â in a group known collectively with the United States as the Five Eyes. But a classified 2010 legal certification and other documents indicate the NSA has been given a far more elastic authority than previously known, one that allows it to intercept through U.S. companies not just the communications of its overseas targets but any communications about its targets as well.

I do hope someone is doing a search of how many times the President said NSA can‘t read your email w/o a warrant.

Told You So, FBI Back Door Search Edition
For a long time, Iâve been noting that the October 3, 2011 John Bates Opinion and last Augustâs Semiannual Report on FISA make it clear that the FBI, like the CIA and NSA, conducts back door searches off Section 702 collected data.
ODNIâs response to Ron Wydenâs request for actual numbers of how many back door searches the government conducts makes it clear that I was correct.
The report is even worse than I imagined. It shows the following:
Just a reminder, while you‘re reading that Blackwater piece: the Obama Administration is actively trying to imprison the guy who wrote it.

U.S. officials disclose data on âbackdoorâ searches of Americansâ phone calls, e-mails
The FBI conducts a âsubstantialâ number of warrantless queries for Americansâ e-mails and phone calls in a special database of intercepted communications, but it does not track exactly how often, an intelligence official said in a letter released Monday.
Inventing Terrorists: The Lawfare of Preemptive Prosecution
SUMMARY
This study, sponsored by two national organizations, Project SALAM (Support And Legal Advocacy for Muslims) and the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms (NCPCF), focuses on post-9/11 claims by the U.S. government that it keeps the country safe from terrorism by arresting hundreds of so-called âterroristsâ who were about to strike the U.S. until the FBI foiled their plots. In fact, this study shows that there have
been remarkably few actual terrorism threats to this country in the last decade.
The vast majority of arrests in the war on terror have consisted of
âą the FBI foiling its own entrapment plots; or
âą the government arresting people on material support for terrorism charges that effectively criminalize innocent conduct, such as charitable giving and management, free speech, free association, peace-making, and social hospitality; or
âą inflation of minor or technical incidents into terrorism events, such as immigration application inaccuracies, old weapons charges, or inaccurate statements to governmental officials
The study shows that the war on terror has been largely a charade designed to make the American public believe that a terrorist army is loose in the U.S., when the truth is that most of the people convicted of terrorism-related crimes posed no danger to the U.S. and were entrapped by a preventive strategy known as preemptive prosecution. The theme of the
study links preemptive prosecution to the metaphor of âlawfare,â the use of the law as a weapon of war, in this case the war on terror.
Also: langsam lesen.
FBI Doesnât Know How Many Americans It Spies On
But the FBI could present no hard numbers on how many American citizens it spies on, according to the letter. âThe FBI does not track how many queries it conducts using U.S. person identifiers,â the letter says. In fulfilling its mandate as a domestic law enforcement agency, the letter says, âthe FBI does not distinguish between U.S. and non-U.S. persons for purposes of querying Section 702 collection.â
