“Tehran has repeatedly overplayed its hand throughout history, and these repeated attacks across the Gulf Cooperation Council could end up making the Strait of Hormuz redundant,” Kamrava told Al Jazeera.

He noted some Gulf countries have already invested in alternative routes to export oil and gas.

“Tehran is running a real danger of overplaying its hand,” Kamrava reiterated.
