Hillary Clinton Defends Call To Deport Child Migrants

(19.8.2015) “It may be safer [for them to stay], but that’s not the answer,” Clinton said then, adding that “they should be sent back.” Clinton also said the U.S. should do more to deal with the violence in Central America so that families won’t feel compelled to send their kids to the United States.

That was before Clinton had officially announced her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Obama Administration Plans Nationwide Deportation Raids

The Washington Post reports the Obama administration is planning a nationwide series of raids to deport hundreds of individuals and families living in the country illegally, marking the first large-scale effort to evict some of the more than 100,000 families that surged across the border last year fleeing violence in Central America. The targets of the raids, the Post reports, would be adults and children that have already been before an immigration judge and already ordered to leave the country. The raids are still subject to Department of Homeland Security approval, but could begin as early as January.

Varoufakis to establish a pan-European political party in February

Varoufakis said he wants to show European voters that there is a third way between a return to the nation state and the “undemocratic structures” of today’s European institutions, according to a preview of the interview.

Varoufakis also argues that “draconian” nature of the measures lenders offered to Greece in the summer was aimed at preventing left-wing Podemos from winning Spain’s elections.

Urgent Call for Solidarity and Action

In the course of armed conflict that restarted in the Kurdish region of Turkey after general elections in June 2015, 186 civilians most of which are women or children have died so far, hundreds of them were injured and thousands of people were arrested. Concerning co-mayors who are members of our union, 17 of them are now arrested while 25 of them were suspended from their duty and 6 of them were issued arrest warrants since July 2015. In order to end human rights violations in our region, there is an urgent need for revitalizing peace talks for resolution of Kurdish question in Turkey.

Since the August of this year, as a reaction to repressive policies of Turkish state that resurged, peoples assemblies in many Kurdish cities and towns voiced their demands for self-governance. These demands for self-governance, -aiming at achieving decentralized structural transformation against centralism- were responded by Turkish government with disproportionate state-led violence. In Kurdish cities where demands were self-governance raised, especially in Cizre, Sur, Silvan, Nusaybin, Dargecit, Silopi and Yüksekova, the Turkish government declared curfews which have continued for weeks during which civilians have been killed by Turkish security forces while mass migration of residents of cities under curfew continue.

What Net Neutrality? T-Mobile Abusing Its ‚Binge-On‘ Effort To Throttle Non-Partner Video

For quite some time now, we‘ve pointed out that the whole zero rating issue was a way for broadband providers to conduct a stealth war on net neutrality — first putting in place „restrictions“ that they could then „lift“ for partners, pretending it was a consumer friendly move. Last month, T-Mobile introduced Binge-on, it‘s second such attempt at zero rating. Its first, Music Freedom, exempted some streaming music services from its data caps. Binge-On focused on video, but had a few oddities. Like Music Freedom, Binge On would make „select“ video streaming platforms exempt from the data cap — but in order to do that, it would downgrade the quality of those streams to 480p, a lower resolution than most are used to these days. It was notable that neither YouTube nor Amazon Prime were included „partners“ in the launch.

But… some people started noticing some problems: specifically, even those services that have not partnered with T-Mobile started seeing their own videos downgraded.

He said he was particularly heartened by all of the posts from „my brothers and sisters in arms.“

„I would just tell her that hatred‘s not going to win, that it‘s OK,“ Sterne said. „There are good people in the world, and the good people will always protect her from the evil people.“

What Went Wrong With Navy SEALs

(18.12.2015) The mission of the American military in Afghanistan was always devilishly complex: a combination of guerrilla warfare, social outreach, military training and institution-building in a forbidding and often hostile land. But it was criminal and inexcusable that Navy SEALs assigned to train Afghan police officers in the village of Kalach joined the police in viciously beating detainees who had been taken into custody after a bomb blast killed a policeman. One was assaulted so badly that he died.

NY Times Warns About Europe Expanding The ‚Right To Be Forgotten‘

We recently warned about how the new Data Protection Directive in the EU, while written with good intentions, unfortunately appears to both lock-in and expand the whole right to be forgotten idea in potentially dangerous ways. A big part of it is that the directive is just too vague, meaning that the RTBF may apply to all kinds of internet services, but we won‘t know for certain until the lawsuits are all finally decided many years in the future. Also unclear are what sorts of safe harbors there may be and how the directive protects against abusing the right to be forgotten for out and out censorship. Unfortunately, many are simply celebrating these new rules for the fact that they do give end users some more power over their data and how it‘s used.

But ignoring how these new rules will almost certainly be abused for censorship and to hold internet providers liable for the speech of others is a mistake. Thankfully, the NY Times has a good editorial warning about this very issue:

Modi’s ongoing trip to Russia should upgrade Delhi-Moscow ties for present-day realities

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing visit to Russia, for the annual bilateral summit between the two countries, comes at a crucial juncture. In the past their partnership has been dominated by defence cooperation. But today it’s the economic dimension that’s crying out for attention. And an opening is presented by US-EU sanctions against Russia over Ukraine and counter-sanctions by Russia. Given the missing trade link in India-Russia ties, it’s welcome that Modi is leading a high-powered business delegation on this trip.
