Operation Barkhane
According to French Defence Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, the main objective of Operation Barkhane is counter-terrorism: „The aim is to prevent what I call the highway of all forms of traffics to become a place of permanent passage, where jihadist groups between Libya and the Atlantic Ocean can rebuild themselves, which would lead to serious consequences for our security.“ French President, François Hollande, has said the Barkhane force will allow for a „rapid and efficient intervention in the event of a crisis“ in the region.
The operation will target Islamist extremists in Mali, Chad and Niger, and will have a mandate to operate across borders.
The French force will be a 3,000-strong counter-terrorism force with 1,000 soldiers indefinitely in Mali.

Der Bundeswehr zufolge sind Soldaten des DSK unter anderem als „mobiles Registrierungsteam“ zur Unterstützung der Bundespolizei „an unterschiedliche(n) Orte(n) in Bayern“ eingesetzt.[9] Dies korrespondiert mit aktuellen Manöverszenarien, bei denen klassische Aktionen des DSK wie die Bekämpfung von Aufständischen und die Durchführung von Operationen hinter den feindlichen Linien mit der „Bewältigung“ von „Massenvertreibungen“ und „Flüchtlingsströmen“ in einem Interventionsgebiet kombiniert werden. Passend dazu wird bei entsprechenden Übungen stets die „zivil-militärische Zusammenarbeit“ mit Hilfsorganisationen und einheimischen Repressionskräften trainiert (german-foreign-policy.com berichtete [10]). Folgerichtig wurden etliche „einsatzerfahrene“ Militärs mit migrationspolitischen Aufgaben betraut. So berichtet etwa ein Sanitätsobergefreiter, der in einer Notunterkunft für Flüchtlinge im hessischen Wetzlar Dienst tut, er habe nicht nur in Afghanistan gekämpft, sondern sich während der sogenannten Majdan-Proteste auch an der „Evakuierung“ verletzter Demonstranten aus der ukrainischen Hauptstadt Kiew beteiligt: „Das war eine knackige Erfahrung, und ich habe gesehen, was die Bundeswehr leisten kann.“

Surveillance state apologists blame Ed Snowden, insisting that he has „blood on his hands“ because the terrorists must have learned how to avoid surveillance from his releases.
