What Will the U.S. and Israel Do Once Every Other Country Recognizes Palestine?

(25.11.2014) The risk here, for the United States and Israel, is the Cuban-ization of Palestinian statehood. Every year for the past 23 years, the U.N. General Assembly has voted to condemn the U.S. embargo on Cuba, and every time the U.S. has looked increasingly isolated and ridiculous. This year, only Israel voted with the U.S. against the condemnation, with Palau, the Marshall Islands, and Micronesia abstaining. (Those islands again.)

Growing support for Palestine

Sweden’s recognition of Palestine means that there are now 135 United Nations member states that accept that Palestine is a “state” with all the rights and privileges to be accorded such an entity. Sweden was one of the 138 states that, in 2012, voted in favour of a resolution upgrading Palestine to the status of a UN Non-member Observer State. The resolution was just one step in a long road for the recognition of the state of Palestine and one that began on Nov 15, 1988, with the Palestinian Declaration of Independence in Algiers, Algeria. By the end of November 1988, there were 65 countries around the globe that affirmed their recognition for Palestine, including Malaysia. Twenty years
later, in 2008, the number had only grown to 107 states that recognised Palestinian statehood.

UN General Assembly Passes Resolution For Palestinian Right To Self-Determination

(19.12.2014) 180 countries voted for the resolution, while only seven states, including the United States and Israel, voted against it.

The seven countries are Israel, the United States, Canada, Marshal Islands, Micronesia, Nauru and Palau. Four Countries (Cameroon, Tonga, South Sudan and Paraguay) abstained.

Permanent Palestinian Observer at the United Nations in New York, Riyad Mansour, said the vote is a continuation and strong affirmation of the international support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, led by their right to self-determination and liberation.

He added that the resolution urged all countries, and all related international and UN institutions, to continue their support for the Palestinian people, and to help them in achieving their independence as soon as possible.

Previously leased by the RBS group and housing a branch of National Westminster Bank, the squatters say that the building has “been taken by the people” in a statement posted on their Facebook page. The current ownership of the corner site is unclear: Land Registry records show that the owner is Greencap Ltd, a Jersey company that appears to have been dissolved.

Commentary: West responsible for turmoils, surge of terrorism in Mideast

Therefore, it is high time for the international community to say loudly and clearly „No more“ to the West‘s military interventionism.

On the other hand, those intervening powers should work out comprehensive and effective measures to help clear up the mess of their own making and heal the wounds of the nations traumatized by their intervention, for the good of all parties involved.

1000s of Ukrainians protest austerity measures

On Tuesday, as many as 2,000 demonstrators outside the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, called on Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk to end the measures dictated by international creditors.

The protesters demanded the premier to stop cutting social benefits, subsidies, and price controls on utility rates, since the state budget is expected to be slashed by 10 percent and gas prices are to become three times more expensive.

Most of the cuts are to be made in the social sector, with 10 percent of the country’s public workers expected to lose their jobs.

Students also took part in the protest, slamming a 20-percent drop in education spending, the abolition of scholarships, and a rise in tuition fees. They also protested against the closure of some 400 schools.
