The so-called Backstop, which the UK will fall into automatically if it fails to agree a new trade deal with Brussels during the transition period, will see Britain remain in a customs union with the European Union.

This means the UK would be legally obliged to continue observing many EU regulations, whilst making it very difficult to sign comprehensive trade deals with other countries.
