Beteiligt sind laut einer Pressemitteilung des Bundeswehrverbands „rund 6.000 Soldaten aus mehreren Ländern“, darunter „Truppen der estnischen Berufs- und Freiwilligenarmee, Wehrpflichtige und Reservisten“ und „Einheiten aus acht Nato-Staaten und Finnland“. Aus Deutschland nehme „eine Kompanie der Bundeswehr teil“.

The historical evidence shows that for each kind of indiscriminate and inhumane weapon subject to a regime for their elimination – for biological and chemical weapons, antipersonnel landmines and cluster munitions – establishment of an unequivocal norm of prohibition of weapons with unacceptable effects has preceded, enabled and been the basis for subsequent work towards their elimination. That is the proven, logical path. It is also the only feasible, practical option at this time. The states represented in this room cannot eliminate weapons they don’t own. But they can prohibit them, internationally and in domestic legislation. Banning and eliminating nuclear weapons is the only way to secure planetary health.

As Mexico pointed out: there is nothing to be said against consensus when it is fair and reflects the truth. But when divergence exists and states with more power due to nuclear weapons wield a veto over the majority then there is nuclear oppression. Now the majority is rising up to liberate itself from this yoke with persuasive and well-thought out arguments for a comprehensive ban treaty. After more than twenty years of attending these often repetitive and boring diplomatic debates, I can hardly wait for the next one.
