Chancellor Philip Hammond said that although he backed Mrs May’s deal, “other options” should be considered at the same time in the House of Commons.

Mrs May’s former policy adviser, Tory MP George Freeman, said her best hope of getting her deal through was by resigning because a new prime minister would be more trusted.
