Ethiopian Israelis and Systematic Discrimination

Israel braced for a third day of intense protests over the police killing of 19-year-old Ethiopian-Israeli Solomon Tekah, but protests seemed to take on a milder tone than the previous day as leaders urged calm and restraint. Appealing directly to the Ethiopian-Israeli community President Reuven Rivlin implored: „We must stop and think together how to continue from here. This is not a civil war.“

On June 30, an off-duty police officer accidentally shot and killed 18-year-old Ethiopian Israeli Salomon Takeh in the Kiryat Hayim section of Haifa. Ethiopians responded by taking to the streets and protesting with some protests evolving into violent riots.

Israelis of Ethiopian origin are demonstrating throughout Israel following the death Sunday of 18-year old Solomon Teka, who was shot by police.

Some of the protests quickly became violent when demonstrators blocked main roads and set on fire a car of a passerby who tried to drive through the blockade.

The protests by Israelis of Ethiopian descent are a badly needed wake-up call for every Israeli. A large number of the demonstrators are youths born in Israel, into a reality of discrimination. Every one of them can tell you at length and with pain in their eyes about the racist epithets they hear at work, in leisure or while walking on the street. On this backdrop come the latest protests, even if the immediate catalyst behind them was the police killing of Solomon Teka in Kiryat Haim.

Office-duty Police Officer Shoots Dead Ethiopian Israeli Teen in Northern Israel

Israel Police said that the officer was not on duty at the time and was trying to separate two youths who were quarreling while he was at a playground with his wife and children.

An eye witness claimed that the officer was the one who instigated the incident, threatening the youths with his weapon.
