The bill was to extend the lifespan of an amendment to Israel’s citizenship law, which effectively barred Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza from receiving residency and citizenship if they married an Israeli.

Enacted in 2003 during the Second Intifada and renewed annually ever since the exception was aimed at the partners of Israel’s Arab population – around 20 percent of its citizens.
