About 45 years ago, Dr. James K. Sutherland (b. Dec. 17, 1897; d. June 15, 1988) of Flint, Michigan, a cardiologist, physician, and surgeon, self-published a 2LP set of home-recorded solo improvisations on the oud. Although deeply obscure, it stands as one of the most virtuosic, profound, and engaging documents of Near Eastern immigrant music made in the 20th century United States.
