The Italian banks are living in a situation of schizophrenia, they are in fact both good and bad. It’s a matter of having a split personality like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Now they want to have a single identity, the good one, that allows them to provide loans to businesses and that’s what the bad part doesn’t allow them to do. The bad part has 300 billion euro that it has loaned out and cannot get repaid, these are the non-performing loans (loans that are unlikely to be repaid) and impaired loans (loans and overdrafts not yet repaid in accordance with the terms). Non-performing loans to companies and families have grown by 24.6% in a year and now stand at 156 billion euro. How can this be got rid of? With a „bad bank“, to which the 300 billion in toxic loans can be transferred so that it’s then possible for the „good banks“ to start over.
