The Pitchfork movement has found sympathy among the security forces deployed to cover the protests, with police officers taking off their helmets during several rallies in a sign of solidarity with the protesters they faced.

The police and paramilitary Carabinieri, a separate force, have complained that they are so underpaid that they are often forced to buy their own uniforms, and even foot the bill for filling their patrol cars with petrol.
