New Jersey health officials released figures for probable Covid-19 deaths for the first time, raising the state’s total fatality count from the illness caused by the new coronavirus to nearly 14,900, a 14% increase over previous estimates.

State officials counted 1,854 probable fatalities after investigating death-certificate data dating back to late winter.
