Philippine Independence day (Araw ng Kalayaan) is celebrated every June 12 to commemorate the country’s independence from the Spanish colonial rule. But it used to be commemorated on July 4, the day when the United States formally recognized the Philippines’ independence. Now, a group is pushing to move the date to August 23 to mark The Cry of Pugadlawin (Sigaw sa Pugadlawin) which started the revolution against the Spanish rule.
