In defence of the Senate – by Maria Fida Moro

When I was young, there was a moment when it truly seemed that there was space for a new, loving, and peaceful humanity. Even the music was largely pointing to this dream that seemed to be within reach and to be a real possibility. It’s not that I’m worried, but profoundly displeased. Is it true that all that was in vain? All the beautiful things have been lost? Will children have to grow up in a world where freedom gets ever more eroded and vague? And the protest songs (even the anarchic ones) and those of the partisans and of the Risorgimento and „Addio Lugano bella“ and “le campane di S.Giusto” and “il Piave che mormorava il 24 maggio” and “il ponte di Bassano” and the bridge of Perati and “la Julia” and „mejo zoventù“ and “Monte Canino”? Everything deleted with a single swipe, together with Bella Ciao, and La guerra di Piero, and We shall overcome. I’m taking note, and once more I almost feel ashamed to be Italian, when I think that a subcommittee of young people creating the Constitution, including not only my father but also Nilde Iotti, toasted my birth with a Thermos flask of coffee and milk that is what the Lower House supplied to those parliamentarians that were the members of the Constituent Assembly. WOULD IT NOT BE SIMPLER TO GO BACK TO COFFEE AND MILK RATHER THAN ABOLISHING THE SENATE?
