Prosecutors opened a criminal inquiry last night into claims that French intelligence agents postdated documents to cover up blunders that allowed jihadists to murder a priest in his church.

The preliminary investigation into allegations of fraud and forgery by intelligence agents came after a report by the news website Médiapart which said they were more concerned about their careers than tracing terrorists.
