The local media reports said that the U.S. administration intended to establish a military security base deep in the Tunisian desert and specifically at the border triangle between Tunisia, Libya and Algeria , to monitor and follow up on Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and « jihadist » affiliates. The reports also mentioned an Intention to transfer of the headquarters of the US African command (AFRICOM) from Stuttgart, Germany to one of the countries in North Africa , including Tunisia ». This was also denied by the US Embassy.
