This month, EFF will dedicate the annual Pioneer Awards Ceremony to Internet visionary, Grateful Dead lyricist, and EFF co-founder John Perry Barlow who left the analog world on February 7, 2018. Barlow’s ideas extended to fields as diverse as fighting mass surveillance, opposing censorship online, and copyright reform. His dedication to online freedom led to a decades-long movement of Internet activism that shows no sign of stopping. Henceforth, the Pioneer Award will be known as the “Barlow” in recognition of the spirit that ignited EFF and left an indelible mark on this connected world.

(9.2.2018) Vor genau zweiundzwanzig Jahren, am 8.Februar 1996 veröffentlichte Barlow aus Anlass des Weltwirtschaftsforums in Davos die Unabhängigkeitserklärung des Cyberspace.
Seither ist fast ein Vierteljahrhundert vergangen, die digitalen technischen Entwicklungen sind rasend schnell mit all ihren neuen Anwendungsmöglichkeiten vorangeschritten. Wir alle wissen, mit welcher Wut und Raserei seither die Regierungen versuchen, die Menschheit im Internet unter ihre Kontrolle zu bringen und sich dabei nicht scheuen, auch zu illegalen Mitteln zu greifen, um den Austausch der Gedanken und die freie Rede zu unterbinden. Kein Gesetz hat in all den vergangenen Jahrtausenden es jemals vermocht, den freien Geist und den Willen zur Selbstbestimmung unseres Handelns aus der Gesellschaft zu verbannen. Es wird heute und in Zukunft nicht funktionieren, solange das in uns innewohnt, was uns zu Menschen macht: Liebe, Kreativität, Neugier, Hoffnung und Mitfühlen mit allen Geschöpfen diese Erde.
