The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) expresses its great concern regarding the dangerous uptick in violence and armed attacks against journalists and human rights defenders in Mexico, particularly in recent weeks. The scale of these attacks reveals an alarming deterioration in the security conditions for journalists and defenders as they carry out their important work and it’s a grave demonstration of the violence they face in the country. In the first few weeks of March 2017 alone, at least the following incidents have been documented:
