After holding senior positions in the 767 program and managing the 757 program he was awarded the position of vice president and general manager of Boeing’s Rotorcraft Systems in Philadelphia.

Shanahan also headed up U.S. Army Aviation programs, which included Boeing’s ballistic-missile defence program.
