Simply put, the US wants NATO to move closer than ever before in the post-Cold War era to Russia’s western borders along the regions that historically were the invasion routes. As if all this is not enough, US is also pushing for the induction of Sweden and Finland, traditionally non-aligned countries, as NATO members. Curiously, these hugely provocative moves notwithstanding, the theme of the NATO summit slated for July in Warsaw happens to be ‘deterrence against Russia’.
