I. INTRODUCTION
1. Egypt underwent its first review under the Universal Periodic Review mechanism on 17 February 2010 during the seventh session of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic
Review. In that first review, Egypt received 165 recommendations of which it accepted 119, rejected 21 and responded to 25 (A/HRC/14/17/Add.1).
2. At that time, Egypt was still under the dictatorship of Honsi Mubarak. The recommendations were therefore considered, and it was endeavoured that regard would be to be given to them
by the government of Mohammed Morsi, and the Freedom and Justice Party. However, President Morsi was forcibly removed from office in an unlawful coup d’état on 3 July 2013.
Following this illegal coup, the military embarked on a violent and aggressive campaign of repression, resulting in severe human rights abuses.
