The number of emergency deployments, up 73 per cent from a year earlier, was the largest count for any half-year period since the ministry started compiling data in 2003, it said on Wednesday.

Jet fighters were scrambled 324 times against Russian planes, many of which were surveillance aircraft, and 207 times against Chinese planes, mostly fighter jets, the ministry said.
