Up to 25 beaches identified as ‚at risk‘ earlier this year could be blacklisted by European Union officials – even though standards are higher than ever.

Coastal towns which fail to meet the new pass mark will be forced to put up signs advising swimmers to stay out of the water.

It is feared the signs – which have to be „rapidly and easily identifiable“ under the EU‘s diktak – will harm tourism around the country.
