A retired diplomat who carried a US message to Egypt‘s Hosni Mubarak last week and on Saturday said he should stay in office during a transition, was speaking as a private citizen, a US official said.

„Frank Wisner was speaking as a private citizen… analyst… not as a representative of the US government,“ the official told reporters on condition of anonymity.
