In days, the Nigerian Parliament will decide whether to approve a $5 billion fine against Shell Oil for the devastation the December spill caused, and whether to pass a law holding oil companies responsible for their pollution and plundering.

If these measures pass, Shell will be the first of dozens of companies who’ll finally have to pay for the wasteland and violence they’ve left behind them – but unless we can muster some global support for the measure, Nigeria’s MPs will buckle under corporate pressure.
