In comments to this newspaper before the Olympic Flame handover ceremony in Athens on May 17, conservative London Mayor Boris Johnson insisted that Greece was actually in a stronger position than is widely believed because “there is no mechanism for expelling Greece from the euro”, adding, sarcastically, that “if the Germans want to sell washing machines to Greece then they have to pay for the single currency”.
