Demonstrations leading up to elections, May 19 – 22, 2011
The U.S. Embassy in Madrid advises U.S. citizens to avoid areas where crowds have gathered to peacefully demonstrate in advance of nationwide municipal and regional elections scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 22, 2011. While no violence is expected, police are present to monitor the demonstrations. We recommend that U.S. citizens specifically avoid Puerta del Sol in Madrid and Plaza Catalunya in Barcelona where large numbers of people have gathered. Smaller groups have also assembled in the cities of Bilbao, Seville, Valencia, Granada, and A Coruna.
