The US military launched a secret mission to rescue a number of Americans, including slain journalist James Foley, held captive by militants in Syria last month but failed to find them, the Pentagon has revealed.

The rescue mission was authorised by US President Barack Obama after intelligence agencies believed they had identified the location inside Syria where the hostages were being held.
