Neither Rights Nor Security: Killings, Torture, and Disappearances in Mexico´s ´War on Drugs´

It has been nearly five years since President Felipe Calderón declared “war” on organized crime in Mexico. In the time since, the country has experienced a staggering rise in violence.

After declining steadily for nearly two decades, the overall homicide rate grew by over 260% percent from 2007 to 2010. The government counted nearly 35,000 deaths related to organized crime from December 2006 to the end of 2010, with the number of killings increasing dramatically with each passing year, from 2,826 in 2007 to 15,273 in 2010.

There have been more than 11,000 drug-related deaths reported in the Mexican press so far in 2011.
