Greece to tackle difficult task of firing state workers: Constitutional crisis looms

In the late 1800s, Greek politicians hired and fired civil servants in a corrupt political system that saw many people dismissed whenever a new government won elections and hired its own supporters instead. In 1911 the constitution was changed, allowing labour unions to organize and granting state jobs for life.

These days, civil servants are returning to the square to fight for the right won 100 years ago.
