(19.12.2015) France has called for assurances that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will quit power after the unanimous adoption by the UN Security Council of a resolution backing a peace process that should mean talks starting in January. Although Russia has sytematically opposed the demand, French Foreign Affairs Minister Laurent Fabius said Assad‘s departure is necessary „for reasons of efficiency as much as for moral reasons“.
