Observers said Tehran has picked up the Egyptian initiative proposed in the Mecca summit and set up its own initiative upon it on the basis that Iran and Turkey would play influential roles, each with its allied party, to push them towards a common solution.

The Iranian initiative attempts to bring the Syrian government and the opposition to the negotiation table and reach an acceptable settlement.
