It is so reassuring, in a way, to focus on discussing individual, recent acts of torture. It makes us feel as if we are a nation that has long exercised civility and a principled code of conduct.

The reality of our history is, however, far different. We have been engaging in domestic and international terrorism since this nation‘s founding.

And it hasn‘t stopped yet.
