During the US occupation, the Iraqi writer has faced abduction and torture for his unbiased reports, as well as arrest and harassment by security forces. He is best-known for his famous act of protest, when he threw his shoes at US President George W Bush in 2008. Al-Zaidy was imprisoned for that act of protest, but also became a hero to his countrymen, Arabs, and more generally anti-imperialists the world over.
