Oman says running out of patience with UAE violations

On Wednesday, Riyadh and Abu Dhabi unveiled a raft of economic deals, signing 20 memorandums of understanding for over 60 joint projects, including in the oil and gas, banking, nuclear energy, and defense.

The deals, approved at a meeting of the Saudi-Emirati Coordination Council in the Saudi port city of Jeddah, did not involve the four other Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members — Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

UAE rules out dialogue with Iran

(18.5.2018) “It is unlikely we will have a dialogue with Iran in light of them supplying missiles to Al Houthis (in Yemen) to launch attacks on Saudi Arabia,” Dr Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, said.

Dr Gargash made these remarks during a discussion on ‘Middle East in Turmoil: Achieving Lasting Stability’ at the annual Globsec forum in Bratislava.

Tehran is much weaker than in 2014 and 2015 because of the economic problems, following the reinstatement of US sanctions, Dr Gargash said.

UAE foreign minister meets secretary of state Pompeo

In his remarks, Sheikh Abdullah thanked the US secretary of state “for being a great partner” and congratulated him on the position he assumed last month and his recent successes. The UAE foreign minister mentioned US progress made on North Korea talks ahead of Mr Trump and Kim Jong Un meeting on June 12, and the US decision on Iran [nuclear deal] as part of these successes.

Rights groups to bring legal action against France over arms sales to Saudi, UAE

France, the world’s third-biggest arms exporter, counts Saudi Arabia and the UAE among its major purchasers, and France’s biggest defense firms, including Dassault and Thales, have major contracts in the Persian Gulf.

The European country has sold Caesar artillery guns and ammunition, sniper rifles and armored vehicles to Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Somalia’s PM owns stake in UAE port deal

An investigation conducted by members of Somaliland’s parliamentary team on corruption uncovered that Hassan Ali Khaire, Somalia’s prime minister, continues to have personal interests at Soma Oil and Gas Company. Khaire stepped down as executive director of Soma Oil and gas in February 2017 to take on the role as Somalia’s prime minister. Khaire has previously said he will “crusade” those involved in corruption, but sentiments are now at confusion over his resolve amid an ongoing crisis with the UAE.
