Boris Johnson should ignore the provocations, recall the gunboats – and gamble on the slow demise of the Macron presidency
A government source said the Taoiseach had not been given any advance warning of the EU decision to invoke the article in the protocol.
The source said the article may have been inadvertently triggered by “someone who did not understand the political implications” of the decision.
Some EU officials are understood to be livid about the move, which they see as ruining the work they’ve done since the Brexit vote in 2016.

In the 1990s developments within the Democratic party would lead to the ideological decline, and then electoral decline of European social democracy. Now, almost three decades later, could recent developments within that same party be the start of an ideological and electoral rejuvenation of European social democracy?

Diese „Union“, dieses „Europa“ ist ein Fluch. Sonst gar nichts.
Paul Mason has made an important contribution to the debate on the left about Brexit. It is an important contribution because Mason is the left’s most militant supporter of the EU: an anti-democratic, capitalist organisation which has become a pillar of globalisation and a driver of inequality. His piece was full of the usual McCarthyite tactic of guilt by association against those who oppose the EU. Mason’s attack on Eddie Dempsey, an anti-fascist trade unionist, was a classic example of this. It is vital that we move beyond this kind of politics on the left.
Labour’s position on the customs union is baffling. For the British left, supporting membership in the customs union is historically incongruous, morally aberrant, and logically inconsistent. Anti-racists, internationalists, and leftists should oppose EU customs union membership for Great Britain.
Ever since Britain’s EU referendum was called there has been a chorus of voices calling on the country to “remain and reform” (R&R) the EU from within. Prime Minister David Cameron was the first to try this, returning from Brussels with some meagre concessions that played no part in the subsequent referendum campaign. Since the vote to Leave, R&R arguments have come from two main groups. The first comprises those who saw little fault in the EU before 2016, and some who probably still don’t, and propose R&R as a sop to Leave voters as part of a campaign to stop Brexit. In the second camp are self-declared leftists, who urge Britain to stay and fight for a socialist EU. This includes commentators like Paul Mason, various lefty academics, and Yannis Varoufakis and his “DiEM 25” movement, which seeks to mobilise reformists across Europe.
The Left must meet this moment in history with a bold plan to remake our economy — or someone else will.
