PATRICK LAWRENCE: The Assassins & Iran

Any thought of Biden and his people riding into town on white horses to save the nuclear deal is strictly naïve.

01.12.2020 - 18:38 [ Financial Times ]

Reckless killing in Iran endangers Biden’s nuclear plan

The assassination ramps up Middle East tensions after months of relative calm, and risks making it far harder for Joe Biden to fulfil his pledge to open negotiations with Iran and rejoin the 2015 nuclear accord if Tehran agrees to return to full compliance with the deal. Mr Trump and Mr Netanyahu both appear bent on doing their best to scupper the US president-elect’s chances before he settles into the White House.

29.11.2020 - 20:30 [ Washington Post ]

Iran’s political establishment faces a serious test of will. So will Joe Biden.

With only a few weeks left until the incoming administration has a chance to relaunch negotiations with the Islamic Republic, Tehran’s foes — in Washington and elsewhere in the Middle East — are gearing up to do whatever they can to stop such efforts even before they begin.

In this respect, the mission to kill Fakhrizadeh was as predictable as it was foolish.

A Scorched Earth Strategy on Iran

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, with the support of President Trump, seems intent on scorching the earth to make it harder for any return to diplomacy under President-elect Joe Biden.

Israel and the Trump administration apparently fear that a Biden administration would seek a quick return to the nuclear agreement, which could revive Iran’s struggling economy and make it harder to contain its influence in the Middle East. Killing Mr. Fakhrizadeh makes that all the more difficult.

‚This is all going to end in tears for Boris‘: Tory MPs and ex-aides say ’nightmare to work with‘ Carrie Symonds should be more like Philip May and ‚keep a lower profile‘ – as PM’s allies warn his future in No10 depends on the success of his ‚reset‘

‚Once you step up to the mark you become a target, which isn’t going to help anyone,‘ one MP told MailOnline.

A former Tory adviser – who is no fan of Mr Cummings – described the events of the past week as ‚unreal‘, saying Ms Symonds had been an ‚absolute nightmare‘ to work with in the past.

Dominic Cummings’s exit is great news for the BBC – and a disaster for any hope of serious reform

The taxi that took Dominic Cummings away from Downing Street for the last time was carrying more than just the Prime Minister’s ex-chief adviser; it also carried away any realistic hope that the Johnson government might deliver on reform of the BBC. With Cummings gone the chances that there will be any serious assault on the Corporation’s privileges and prerogatives are severely diminished.

14.11.2020 - 14:27 [ Telegraph.co.uk ]

With Dominic Cummings gone, Boris himself is dangerously exposed

Mr Cummings understood that Boris Johnson was the only political leader unconventional enough to overcome this. He therefore devised a strategy for him which confronted the pretensions of rebel Conservative MPs (by taking away the whip) and incurred the wrath of the Supreme Court by proroguing Parliament. This made Boris seem, to many voters, the one man who would honour a promise: Get Brexit Done. It prevailed, winning the biggest Tory majority since 1987. This sensational sequence of events was achieved against the most bitter Establishment resistance in living memory.

Netanyahu Learnt the Lesson of Rabin’s Assassination. The Israeli Left Should Too

“Rabin’s murder was a perfect murder that paid off,” the late Prof. Moshe Negbi once wrote. This is a serious charge, but an accurate one. Netanyahu owes his political existence to this murder. The roots of his rule are planted in the blood of the slain prime minister. Fanning the violence and then looking away is a strategy that served him both before the murder and after it.

The Election That Could Break America

The Interregnum comprises 79 days, carefully bounded by law. Among them are “the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December,” this year December 14, when the electors meet in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to cast their ballots for president; “the 3d day of January,” when the newly elected Congress is seated; and “the sixth day of January,” when the House and Senate meet jointly for a formal count of the electoral vote. In most modern elections these have been pro forma milestones, irrelevant to the outcome. This year, they may not be.

Making of a myth: Timeline of media’s role in selling ‚Trump-Russia collusion‘ tale

Nov. 18, 2016:

Trump announces Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn as his choice for National Security Adviser. Over the next few weeks, Flynn communicates with numerous international leaders.

Nov. 30 – Dec. 28, 2016:

Two dozen Obama administration officials make requests to unmask the name of National Security Adviser designee Flynn, who was „incidentally“ captured by intel surveillance. The officials include: U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and CIA Director John Brennan.

Jan. 5, 2017:

The Word ‚Magician‘ Hardly Describes Netanyahu’s Stunning Achievement

The word “magician” is too weak to describe this stunning achievement, which isn’t solely a result of his political abilities. His magic, as in countless other occasions during his long career, was mixed with something else – destiny. Cosmic wizardry.

Pelosi on eve of impeachment vote: ‚In America, no one is above the law‘

„No Member came to Congress to impeach a President. But every one of us, as our first act as a Member of Congress, stood on the House Floor, raised our hand and took a sacred oath: ‚I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.‘ That oath makes us Custodians of the Constitution. If we do not act, we will be derelict in our duty,“ she wrote.

Donald Trump was elected to break the elite. Of course they want to impeach him

You have to remember: Donald Trump wasn’t elected to fit in with these people — the political, intellectual class — to make them happy, or to become one of them. He was elected to break them. And that’s apparently what he’s done.

Former US intel official says Trump would often push back in briefings

„The one is ‚I’m not sure I believe that,'“ Gordon said, according to CNN. „And the other is the second-order and third-order effects. ‚Why is that true? Why are we there? Why is this what you believe? Why do we do that?‘ Those sorts of things.“

Gordon implied that briefing the president frequently left intelligence officials unsure of where else he was receiving information that may have contributed to his doubt.

Obama is wrong: Dems are not #TooFarLeft

Establishment and Wall Street Dems are misreading the winds of public sentiment if they believe moderation is a winning political strategy for 2020. There is no constituency for a presidential candidate who prescribes half-measures to put out a fire.

Mr Johnson was speaking after the US President had waded into the election, suggesting that Mr Farage and the prime minister join forces and that the Johnson Brexit deal was flawed.

The Brexit Party is ready for the general election. As the European election made clear, we have hundreds of high quality candidates from a diverse range of backgrounds who are united in their desire to secure a proper break from Brussels and who share a lack of trust in the political class.

We will use the substantial funds which our donors and supporters have helped us raise to fight every seat. If we are the only party willing to stand up for a proper Brexit, so be it.

How Venezuela defeated Washington’s coup attempt at the United Nations

Since January, the US has pressured countries to revoke Venezuela’s status at the United Nations, converting the international body into a battleground for the country’s sovereignty.

“[Nicolas] Maduro is and will remain the legitimate president of Venezuela, by the people’s sacred right to self-determination,” Rodríguez announced before the General Assembly moments after her arrival.

As Rodríguez took the floor, a modestly sized group of representatives from US-allied countries walked out of the hall, in a display of opposition to her presence. The walk-out recalled scenes from diplomatic meetings from Vienna to Geneva in the months following Washington’s move to recognize Guaidó as Venezuela’s president in January.
