The DOJ has turned over additional FISA records to Republicans, and former intelligence officials say the implications could be ‚catastrophic‘

The immediate concern, according to the former CIA operative Glenn Carle, is that turning over information related to FISA records could compromise sources and methods.

„Congressional oversight is not operational control, it’s policy control,“ Carle said. „So it’s not really appropriate for an oversight body and its members to have detailed knowledge of sources and methods, because they are not trained in how to handle that.“

Images of immigrant children held at centers raise the question: Where are the girls?

(19.6.2018) Information about where the girls are being held has been sparse.

On Tuesday morning, officials from the Department of Homeland Security and HHS told reporters on a conference call they are working on getting „government resources“ to obtain and release images of girls and toddlers being held at shelters.

Kansas Group Won’t Give Details on Immigrant Children It Has

The lack of information on the children housed by The Villages prompted two state lawmakers to schedule a Statehouse news conference Friday to demand more transparency. They said The Villages told them it needed two weeks‘ notice for a tour of its Topeka homes.

„We don’t know what the arrangement is — that’s the thing,“ said Democratic state Rep. John Alcala, of Topeka, one of the lawmakers calling the news conference. „It was the non-transparency that concerned us the most.“

The Villages, based in Topeka, has a contract with the federal government to house and provide services for 50 „unaccompanied children“ ages 6 to 18, Joseph Wittrock, its president, confirmed Thursday.

Real Security Begins At Home (On Your Smartphone)

There’s a lot to unpack here, and one key question is whether „capabilities available to national security programs“ — that is, technologies used for FBI’s counterintelligence programs — can and should be used in pursing criminal investigations and prosecutions. (If such technologies are used in criminal cases, the technologies may have to be revealed as part of court proceedings, which would bother the counterintelligence personnel in the FBI who don’t want to publicize the tools they use.) But the case against Apple Inc. was based on a blanket assertion by FBI that neither its technical divisions nor the vendors the agency works with had access to any technical measures to break into Farook’s company-issued iPhone. (Farook had destroyed his personal iPhones, and the FBI’s eventually successful unlocking of his employer-issued phone apparently produced no evidence relating to the terrorist plot.)

Was the problem just bureaucratic miscommunication?

Not One Israeli Opposition Member Stood in Solidarity

(24.1.2018) The only ones who faithfully represented opponents of the occupation, seekers of peace and lovers of Israeli democracy on Tuesday were the members of the Joint List. All the other opposition members, by their spontaneous apathy, proved that their leader is none other than Netanyahu, and that they deserve their marginal role in the nationalist puppet theater that the prime minister manages.

Republicans and Democrats blast Trump for bombing Syria without legal authority

In a briefing after Trump’s announcement, Secretary of Defense Mattis argued that the President relied on his Article II powers under the Constitution to authorize the strike. This is the same authority Trump claimed to authorize his 2017 attack.

The Unconstitutional Strike on Syria

“To see what is under one’s nose,” George Orwell wrote in 1946, “requires a constant struggle.” Orwell didn’t add that trying to point out what is under our noses can turn one into a kind of Ancient Mariner at whose approach both friend and foe are tempted to flee.

But here goes: Trump did not have the authority to order any kind of strike on Syria. Congressional authorization was needed before any use of force against Syria; Friday’s attack was unconstitutional.
